The Dutta lab is investigating how myeloid cells, such as monocytes and macrophages, induce inflammation in metabolic disease such as type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease such as myocardial infarction. The ultimate goal of the lab is to develop potential therapeutic avenues to check generation of myeloid cells in the bone marrow and spleen, and recruitment of myeloid cells to sites of inflammation such as adipose tissue and the myocardium. We are also keenly interested to investigate differential functions of tissue resident and monocyte-derived macrophages in steady state and disease.

The Schopfer lab studies the role of fatty acids in signaling, inflammation, and nutrition. Using mass spectrometry, robust analytical approaches, and organic chemistry, we develop tools and investigate the role of novel fatty acids in disease, focusing on metabolic and cardiovascular areas. Based on our findings and medicinal chemistry approaches, we engineer fatty acids and develop therapeutic strategies to treat inflammatory, autoimmune, and fibrotic diseases with a focus on human translation. We successfully conducted Phase I and II clinical trials with lead compounds.
